Extreme crossover Lamborghini Urus: details

The official premiere of the crossover Lamborghini Urus will take place in the early days of December, and to warm up interest in the car, the company almost every day releases a new portion of teasers. More details were published by the American edition of Motor Trend, whose journalists have already traveled on prototypes of Urus. Such Lamborghini world has not yet seen! But, alas, not in all aspects this phrase should be perceived positively. From an engineering point of view Urus is very far from both the classic super cars of the brand and the off-road car Lamborghini LM002 of the eighties. 

Urus will be the first for 24 years off-road and front-engine car of the brand (production of model LM002 was stopped in 1993). But if the former SUV had army roots, a frame structure and a mighty atmospheric V12, then the new crossover is arranged quite differently. The basis is the carrier platform MLB Evo of the concern Volkswagen, which created the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Audi Q7, and if you dig deeper, then on its own version even Audi A4 is based.


Urus will be the first for 29 years model Lamborghini with the eight-cylinder engine – such motors have disappeared from a scale in 1988 together with model Jalpa. And turbo-supercharging and at all it is applied for the first time in history of the Italian mark, after all under a cowl – the engine Audi V8 4.0 with two turbo compressors. Why not the V10 or V12 from the “passenger” Lambo? Because China. This market is one of the most important for Urus, and according to local laws motors over 4.0 liters are subject to draconian taxes. And if in the case of super cars Aventador and Huracan on it you can close your eyes, then Urus should become mass (by the standards of Lamborghini, of course).


Biturbo Audi was forced to 650 hp and 850 Nm. For comparison: a similar engine for the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo produces 550 hp. and 770 Nm, and the W12 engine on the Bentley Bentayga develops 608 hp. and 900 Nm. Coupled with the engine – again, for the first time for Lamborghini – the traditional eight-speed “automatic” ZF with a torque converter operates. Therefore, the ultimatical sharpness of Lambo super cars with their “robots” can not be expected here. Moreover, even the shrill roar of the motor, characteristic for the brand cars, Urus is deprived due to the certification requirements of the USA. To please all and immediately is not easy …


As for the dynamic characteristics, the Lamborghini is promised to accelerate to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 300 km / h. Porsche Cayenne Turbo is inferior to Urusu on both counts (3.9 s, 286 km / h), but the Italian crossover did not become the record holder. The Bentley Bentayga is formally fast (301 km / h), although it exchanges a hundred for 4.1 s. And then there’s the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (717 hp), the creators of which promise acceleration to 97 km / h in just 3.5 seconds, although the maximum is only 290 km / h.
However, with the driving character there must be order, even despite an impressive mass – about 2.2 tons. The all-wheel-drive Urus is equipped with an active rear differential, which can change the thrust vector, and the steering gear of the rear wheels. A separate masterpiece is monstrous brakes. The front mechanisms have as many as ten pistons! Behind the calipers are four-piston ones. And the diameter of carbon-ceramic discs is impressive: 439 mm in front and 371 mm in back. This is almost the biggest brake among the production cars. The base wheels are 21 inches in diameter, but you can order 22 or 23 inch rollers. 

A choice of six modes of driving electronics, which traditionally have Italian names: Strada (road), Sport, Corsa (racing), Neve (snow), Sabbia (sand) and Terra (ground). The last two are likely to become the prerogative of Urus in a special version of Dune with chamfered bumpers and enlarged corners of entry and exit, but the final decision has not yet been made – and all six modes can appear already “in the base.” Time for fine-tuning is, because the sales of Urus will not begin until May next year.
